The store claims to be the oldest operating hardware store in the United States, having begun business in 1782.〔(Elwood Adams Hardware ) History〕〔(New York Times ), ''In Ridgefield, Farewell to a Family Business'', May 31, 1998〕 The building that the store resides in was built in 1831 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. It is the oldest continuously used commercial block in Worcester.
